Interview: The Squawk (Hong Kong)

Site News — 곰형 @ August 5th, 2007

Formed in 2006 The Squawk is a very young, yet still one of few streetpunk bands in Hong Kong. They just released their 5 Track demo EP and toured through China, where they played with bands like Demerit. Let’s see what guitarist Ho and vocalist Bob have to say about their band.

SAT: What made you want to form a punk band in the first place?

Bob: There’s no true punk band in HongKong. Everybody here just plays metal, emo, pop rock, or pop punk music, so me & Ho had an idea: Why dont we form a punk band to piss everybody off ?
Ho: First of all, we saw that there is no street punk band in the HongKong underground scene. It only has some pop punk bands, therefore, we wamted to form it. Also we wanted to express our anger about our fucking government., as our government imposed lots of stupid policies.

New Interview: Suck Stuff (South Korea)

Site News — 곰형 @ August 1st, 2007

The 2001 founded Suck Stuff is one of the most important contemporary streetpunk bands in South Korea. While Chul-hwan didn’t seem too excited to be interviewed and excused himself with his “shitty English” I was left alone with Paul, who had a couple of very interesting things to say!

SAT: How did you come to join Suck Stuff in the first place?

Paul: Suck Stuff was my favourite Korean band for years. I had another band in Utah called The 12th Street Staggers but that fell though and I needed money so i moved back to Korea. They (Suck Stuff) were losing their other guitar player but I didn’t know when, so i had to wait for him to leave the band first. Finally about 3 years ago I joined the band. Lucky me, i was trying to start a streetpunk band at the time, but I couldn’t find members.

Shorty Cat Header

SAT: First of all tell us about how you girls met and how you got the idea to form a punk rock band.

Shorty Cat: Most of our members liked punk when we encountered the music for the first time, so it was just natural for us to start a punk band. We used to watch punk concerts together, but first we joined different bands…eventually we got along together and started our band together.

Interview: B.B.Bomb (Taiwan)

Site News — 곰형 @ July 28th, 2007

Just returned from their China tour, on which they were supported by acts like Hang on the Box and Hard Candy, we caught FuFu, the leadsinger of Taiwan’s most promising riot grrrl band B.B.Bomb for an exclusive interview.

BBB

SAT: How did you you guys meet and how did your band get started?

FuFu: At the 2003 “Say Yes To Taiwan Festival” I saw the Show of the Japanese rockband “softball”‘ and I started to also want to play punk music and form a girl band. Actually B.B.Bomb already started in March 2003, but we didn’t really do anything until after the festival. The original B.B.Bomb members all were classmates from Tunghai’s fine art university. Around July 2003 we used MD to record our first poor demo. After some months all members except me left the band. Only I was left, so I found a bass player over a website. Until now,we still have no fix girl drummer, so we always need to find a male drummer to help us out. Our last substitute drummer told us that his girlfriend loves our band and also plays guitar, so eventually she played some shows with us. After our China tour bass and I found that we don’t need a second guitar, we thought one guitar is better than now, so the second guitarist left.

Site News — 곰형 @ July 28th, 2007

Dzap Dau Dau is an all-girl Punk rock band from Hong Kong. After a lot of successful shows at music festivals in China, Taiwan and Macau and the release of their first full lenght album Dog Days it’s time that the grrrls also get some attention here.

Georg:
Please give us a brief introduction about how you guys met, how you started the band and how it changed over the years.
DDD:
Myth and I (Meg) met in a friend’s house.
Po and I met when we’re born, coz we’re sisters.
We loved music and believed that we could write our own music, then we started the band.
In these years, we’re trying to mix more different kinds of music / materials in DDD’s music.
Georg:
The English translation of Dzap Dau Dau is Pick up the Beans, where does the name come from?
DDD:
: It comes from a cartoon book. It doesn’t have any meaning for us, we just like the sound, it’s so funny in Cantonese (and everyone speaks Cantonese when you guys call the name).
Georg:
Dzap Dau Dau is around for good 10 years now, why did it take so long for you to release your first full lenght album?
DDD:
Oh, no no. DDD is not around that long. DDD was started in 2000.

DDD:
That’s all on planning and contacting at this moment. DDD would like touring all of the cities, just contact us, I’m sure that we like to gig everywhere.
Georg:
What are your best and worst memories with the band?
DDD:
We met much friends all over the world while touring, all of them play great music. These are all the best memories.
Georg:
What was the craziest thing that ever happened at your concerts?
DDD:
Once we had a gig outdoor and there were thousands of termites flying around the light on the stage. When we were singing they flew into our mouths…
Georg:
After your CD release, is it still like you don’t get paid for your Gigs in HK?
DDD:
Haaahaa….can I skip this question??
Georg:
Besides playing in the band what do you do to make a living?
DDD:
